SA Calcium Carbide is situated on the outskirts of the town of Newcastle in the province of KwaZulu Natal, in the Republic of South Africa.
The facility consist of two sites, namely the production furnace on the Karbochem site, whilst the screening and drumming facility is situated 17 km away on the Ballengeich site on the way to the south.



1983 - Sentrachem Ltd commissioned the calcium carbide furnace with the intention to produce acetylene which formed the building block for the production of poly-isoprene synthetic rubber. The strategic intent was to make RSA independent of imported Rubber.
1991 - The calcium carbide processing units at Ballengeich was bought by Sentrachem from another company, AECI.
1997 - Sentrachem Ltd was bought by The Dow Chemical Company;
2003 - DOW sold the business to a Management consortium that operated the business as “SA Calcium Carbide (Pty) Ltd”.
2008 - The Andina Group acquired the shares in SACC.  The company has benefited with the addition of technology and experience of the Andina Group.




The Company is governed by procedures and policies that is dictated by South African legislation and thus provides a framework for the smooth running of the business.

SACC is managing HR relations in line with the following important aspects i.e.

Conditions of Employment
Disciplinary Code
Code of good conduct.
Employment equity plan.

SACC has polices that guide the conditions of employment and labour relations in the company.  Conditions of Employment are a set of rules that was mutually agreed on by Management and all other stakeholders but built on the minimum requirements as stipulated in the Basic Conditions of Employment Act.

An industrial relations handbook is in place that attempts to provide guidelines to everyone involved in the practice, management and administration of industrial relations at SACC.  The industrial relations is governed by legislation and agreements recognized by all stakeholders.
Responsible administration of disciplinary action is necessary for the smooth and efficient operation of the company to ensure fairness and consistency.  The code of conduct and intellectual property agreement introduces new incumbents to the expected standard of behavior and practice that SACC inculcates in our workforce.

SACC also has a policy to ensure that the company takes active steps to promote employment equity.  The objective is to eradicate discriminatory practices and promote a diverse workforce.
